Touches Of Doubles Of Up To 720 Changes
The idea of touches of more than 120 of Doubles may seem a bit odd. However, the idea of a 240 of Grandsire Doubles has been around for a long time. In an ideal 240 of Doubles each row appears twice, once at handstroke and once at backstroke. Although it is possible to nest any 120 inside any other 120 (maybe of a different method) to give a true 240 it will not have this property as a “proper” 240 requires a special composition. This article describes 240s in a number of methods.
Grandsire Doubles
There are three 240s of Grandsire Doubles given here. These are quoted here without further comment except that each is referred to by the name of its composer. It has been said that these three 240s are the only ones that exist. My computer programme would seem to confirm this.

Most people may want to rotate Morris's and Elliott's to get the 5th (or some other particular bell) home at the part ends. This is left as an exercise for the reader.
Methods With 2nd's and 5th's Places Made At The Lead End
A 240 does not exist for either Plain Bob Doubles or St Simon's Doubles. However there are touches of 240 changes with each row at handstroke and backstroke but that do not come round at the end, having three bells out of place.
Since the 240s that exist all have three bells out of place at the end, if each is rung three times these bells will finally return home. The touch so produced will have 720 changes and will have each row three times at handstroke and three times at backstroke. Each 240 of the touch will be true. Below are the complete sets of 240s for each of Plain Bob Doubles and St Simon's Doubles (which can be used for any method with the same lead order as either Plain Bob or St Simon's). None of the 240s come round but along with each is shown the final row of the touch. Not only can any one of the 240s be called 3 times for a 720 but they can be mixed with any other 240 that ends with the same row. Similarly any 240 can be used with another 240 ending with the alternative row to produce a true 480 (each row twice at handstroke and backstroke in true 240s).
The touches below are arranged in pairs in which the bodies of each touch of a pair are the same but each ends with either a bob or a plain. Since we want each 240 to be true we cannot have with a 240 more than one consecutive bob in Plain Bob or three consecutive bobs in St Simon's or three consecutive plains. However, there is no reason why the final call of one 240 and the first calls of the next cannot exceed these limits and the truth of each 240 be maintained. The purist, however, may prefer to avoid situations were there are too many consecutive bobs or plains and this can be achieved by proper selection of touches.
Interestingly there are no touches in either group in which the 5th bell is not at home at the end. The reason for this is not yet known. Some of the touches are reversals of other touches. However, there are no rotations of any touches. Each touch must be rung as shown if the property of each 720 being made up of three consecutive true 240s is to be maintained.
For a quarter peal one could ring a 720 and a 480 to give 1200 and add a 60 at a place of one's choice. It would also be possible to ring the standard 60 (p b x 3) but omit the final bob to produce 3425 and then ring two of the 240s that end with 3425 to produce a 540. Since the 240s are true in themselves it is possible to ring a 720 or 480 consisting of 240s of different methods. The only restrictions on combining 240s are that each is rung in its entirety (although nesting is possible) and that 240s with the correct final row are used.
Plain Bob Group
The methods that the following touches apply to are those 2nds place methods with Plain Bob lead heads which come up in the same order as in Plain Bob. Examples of suitable methods are New Bob, Winchendon Place Bob and St Hilary's Bob. The 240s may also apply to some irregular method groups but the reader is encouraged to do his own proofs. St Simon's Group

There are 96 touches in this group. Because St Simon's can have up to three consecutive bobs there is more scope than with Plain Bob. The second half of the set is identical to the first half but with bobs and plains interchanged.

Methods Without Places Made At The Lead End
There are two groups of methods in this category: those where 2345 produces 3524 at the first lead end and those where 2345 produces 4253 at the first lead end. Both of these groups differ from previous groups in that they both produce 240s that come round at the end and those that don't all have just a pair of bells swapped so that apart from 240s the only extended touches available are 480s.
